Variations - Rules and Lists
The following instructions are to help competitors
properly prepare for the LIBC. Instructions for the
Junior Division (ages 9-11) are as follows:
- There are no costumes. Female competitors must
wear a black tank leotard, ballet pink tights and pink
ballet slippers (no pointe). Male competitors must
wear a snug white T-shirt, black tights and black
ballet slippers.

All music selections must be continuous, not
less than forty seconds and no more than one
minute duration and must be completely without
any vocals. The audio tracks should simply fade to
black at the desired or allotted time if the music
selection is longer than necessary. Avoid an abrupt
ending to your audio track. Fadeout should not
exceed five seconds.

The Junior variation or enchainement must
contain three required elements as listed: (at least2 different) large jumps, (at least 3 different) small
jumps and (at least 2 different) turns plus at least
three different optional elements as listed below:
Required Elements:
Large Jumps (at least 2 different) select from:
Sissonne, Grand Jétè En Avant, Grand Jétè En
Tournant or Saut de Basque.
Small Jumps (at least 3 different) select from:
Entrechat Royale, Trois or Quatre, Glissade,
Assemblé, Pas de Chat, Sauté Arabesque, Échappé
or Jétè.
Turns (at least 2 different) select from: Piqué,
Chainé turns, or Pirouette En Dehors.
Optional Elements:
At least three different – select from: Pas de Bourrée,
Balancé, First Arabesque (piqué or relevé), Coupé
Ballonné, Pas Couru, Passé, Retiré, or EmboÎté.
Senior Division (ages 12-14) and Pre-Professional Division (ages 15-18) may select from the
following list of variations below which are separated into male and female categories. All competitors must
select two classical variations from the list provided. Additionally, Pre-Professional Division competitors
will perform a contemporary selection in addition to the two classical selections.

Contemporary
Pre-Professional Division only: The Contemporary selection is restricted to a maximum of two
and one half minutes in duration and must not include any vocals on the sound track. The audio track
should simply fade to black at the desired or allotted time if the music selection is longer than necessary. Avoid an
abrupt ending to your audio track. Fadeout should not exceed five seconds. For the Contemporary variations,
competitors are not required but are strongly encouraged to perform en pointe. Costumes and choreography
must be in good taste and reasonable for a general audience. The competitor is solely responsible for obtaining any
and all choreographers’ and music rights for the contemporary variation performed at the competition. The LIBC
shall be held harmless, by the competitor, for a failure on the competitors part to abide by the competition rules.
