Rules & Procedures
The LIBC competition is open only to nonprofessional
dancers who reside in and receive
their primary dance training on Long Island which
shall be deemed to include Brooklyn, Queens,
Nassau and Suffolk counties. The LIBC maintains
a non-discrimination policy.*
* The Long Island Ballet Competition does not
discriminate against individuals on the basis
of race, color, gender, sexual orientation,
religion, disability, age, ancestry, national or
ethnic origin or socioeconomic background.
All competitors shall compete as individuals.
There are no pas de deux or ensemble categories.
There are three divisions: Junior, ages 9-11;
Senior, ages 12-14; and Pre-Professional, ages
15-18. The order of competing appearance in each
division will be determined by competitors age and
date of birth. The order shall be youngest to
oldest. Females and males will compete separately,
females first then males in their respective divisions.
Division age restrictions are predicated on the
competitor’s age as of the competition date
which is deemed to be May 3, 2008.
Junior Division (ages 9-11): competitor
must have reached their ninth birthday but not
their twelfth birthday on or before May 3, 2008.
Senior Division (ages 12-14): competitor
must have reached their twelfth birthday but not
their fifteenth birthday on or before May 3, 2008.
Pre-Professional Division (ages 15-18):
competitor must have reached their fifteenth
birthday but not their nineteenth birthday on or
before May 3, 2008.
Waiver: A competitor may request to move up
to a higher age division if the individual is within
six months of the minimum age requirement for
that category.
Requirements: All classical variations must be
selected from the Addendum LIBC Variations
Rules and List, herein below, which specify
requirements for each division and gender. All
sound tracks provided on separate CD(s) by
each competitor must be completely free of
applause, vocals and/or any distracting noises (such
as scratches, pops and/or hisses) that may mar the
sound quality of the selection. Pre-Professional
Division competitors are solely responsible for
obtaining any and all choreographers’ and music
rights for the contemporary repertory performed
at the competition. In the event of an issue with
any musical CD during LIBCs application review
process, a timely replacement will be immediately
requested by LIBC. Replacement musical CDs are
the sole responsibility of the applicant. Failure to
provide a usable CD(s) will result in rejection of
the application.
Competitor Responsibility: Where applicable,
costumes and make-up are the responsibility of
each competitor. An allowable costume accessory
shall be deemed to be a hand held article which is
integral to the variation being performed such as a
fan, tambourine or bow (Diana & Acteon). There
are no props permitted. Applicants are required to
comply with the LIBC Competitors Application
in all respects.
Scheduling: All competitors are
report to the registration desk at 10:00 am on
Saturday, May 3, 2008 in the main lobby at the
Maguire Theater, SUNY College at Old Westbury,
Westbury, New York. Directions to the theater
and a detailed schedule of events and educational
components and information about the teachers
will be posted on the LIBC website one week prior
to the competition and given to each competitor
upon check-in.
Awards: LIBC has allocated three cash or cash
equivalent prizes for each division of female
competitors in the amounts of $250 for 1st Prize,
$150 for 2nd Prize and $100 for 3rd Prize.
In the event there are fewer than six male
competitors in the competition, a single $250 1st
Prize Male Dancer Award will be awarded. If more
than six male competitors compete, additional
awards will be at the discretion of the jury. Award
winners will receive a LIBC certificate indicating
their award. All other competitors will receive a
LIBC certificate of participation.
The decision of the jury is final. Adjudication
is predicated on four equally weighted criteria:
Artistry, Technique, Difficulty, and Facilities. The
jury reserves the right to withhold any award
or divide any award between more than one
competitor. Special prizes awarded by sponsors
will be awarded by a sponsor’s representative.
All recipients of scholarships are responsible for
contacting and making all arrangements directly
with the awarding sponsor. If unable to accept the
award, the recipient must communicate directly
with the awarding organization.
Jury Scores: LIBC does not automatically release
jury scores. However, by marking the appropriate
box on the Competitor’s Application Form and
providing a valid e-mail address where indicated,
the LIBC will e-mail a competitor their scores
reflecting the average grade in each of the four
adjudicated categories with a comparison to the
average scores of all competitors in that division.
Judges comments, if any, will also be included.
Fees: LIBC requires that the following fee schedule
be adhered to as detailed on the LIBC Competitors
Application which is an integral part of the
LIBC List of Rules and Procedures: Junior – $75,
Senior – $100 and Pre-Professional – $135. There
is a $15 charge for all returned checks. The Long
Island Ballet Competition is a registered 501(c)(3)
not-for-profit organization.
Refunds: There will be no refunds. In the event
a competitor is unable to compete due to medical
reasons a written notice thereof must be submitted
accompanied by a letter from a doctor attesting
to the competitor’s unavailability. LIBC will issue a
credit voucher which can be utilized by the dancer
or their studio for the following year’s competition.
Deadline: All complete (as detailed on the LIBC
Competitors Application) registration entries
must be postmarked by April 10, 2008. In order
to determine the competition schedule and print
the program, this deadline must strictly be adhered
to. Phone, fax or e-mail entries will not be accepted
unless specifically authorized by LIBC by prior
arrangement. A Competitor Order Time Schedule
will be posted on the LIBC website one week prior
to the competition which will detail all class times,
location and the order of competitor stage calls.
The Competitor Order Time Schedule is an
integral part of the LIBC Rules and Procedures.
The competition will be limited to the time available.
Entries will be accepted on first come, first serve basis.
Event Tickets: All performances will be held in
front of a public audience. Weekend pass tickets
will be available to the public at $25 for adults and
$15 for seniors and students 18 or under.
Photo Rights: LIBC reserves the right to use
any photographs and/or video taken, on behalf
of LIBC, of any competitor or teacher during any
event at the competition for LIBC promotional
purposes. In addition, photos submitted as part
of the application process shall become the nonexclusive
property of LIBC and can be utilized, but
will be restricted to, promotion of the current or
future LIBC competitions. LIBC strictly prohibits
the use of all videographic and photographic
equipment during the Competition with the
exclusive exception of LIBCs designees.
Hold Harmless: The LIBC, the Maguire Theater
and SUNY Old Westbury are not responsible for any
personal injury or property loss. All participants are
required to be self-insured and to indemnify LIBC.
Administrative Rights: LIBC has the right to
amend rules and regulations at any time. In the
event an issue is not clearly addressed in the rules
and regulations, LIBC shall adjudicate the issue.
LIBCs decision shall be binding. Competing dancers
and their teachers are expected to demonstrate
good sportsmanship and general support of all
participants. The LIBC has the right to discontinue
the participation of any competitor for cause.
