Long Island Ballet Competition
Announcing the:
Long Island Ballet Competition
May 3 – 4, 2008
John and Lillian Maguire Theater
Campus Center, SUNY College at Old Westbury
Entry Deadline: April 10, 2008

Dating back to the mid-1950’s, Long Island has had a rich history of contributing to the artistic fabric of the Metropolitan area’s treasure trove of dance. From the advent of the Eglevsky Ballet, under the direction of André and Leda Eglevsky, to today’s current crop of professional ballet training academies, Long Island can lay claim to nurturing numerous professional dancers. In recognition of the burgeoning dance community, Saraband Ltd., a not-for-profit organization founded by Linda Zoffer, broke new ground in 1986 by conducting Long Island’s first major homegrown ballet competition. Originally envisioned as a showcase for Long Island, the Saraband Ltd. Competition grew to national stature before its dissolution in 1991.

Decades of explosive growth on Long Island coupled with a desire to fill the void created by the loss of Saraband, gave rise to two Long Island-centric ballet competitions in 2006. The precursors to the current Long Island Ballet Competition (LIBC) were organized by Lumière Ballet and the Ballet Education and Scholarship Fund, Inc. (BESFI). Lumière’s version of the LIBC was held at the Maguire Theater at SUNY Old Westbury, and the BESFI Challenge was presented at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. The confluence of these driving forces has yielded a unique collaboration between several major Long Island dance organizations. The result is a not-for-profit organization, the Long Island Ballet Competition, whose mission is to promote and encourage a high standard of excellence in classical ballet, educate and challenge the aspiring dancer, and expand the audience for ballet on Long Island.

Please join us on May 3rd and 4th, 2008 at the John and Lillian Maguire Theater, Campus Center, SUNY College at Old Westbury, for the 2008 Long Island Ballet Competition, as we celebrate tomorrow’s professional ballet dancers.
The mission of the Long Island Ballet Competition is to promote and encourage a high standard of excellence in classical ballet, educate and challenge the aspiring dancer and expand the audience for ballet on Long Island.
